Always use fresh clean coolant with any new install, for both foreign and domestic vehicles. Coolant not only prevents freezing but lubs the bearing in the unit and lowers the boiling point and prevents rust in the radiator and the engine block extends the life of the heater core. Coolant must be used winter or summer. It is never fun to have your car or truck overheat when traveling. Overheating can crack the engine block or warp a cylinder head destroy a radiator. A poor performing water pump is only second to a coolant leak in leading to system destruction.
