Always use fresh clean coolant when installing a new part or component. Coolant not only prevents freezing but lubricates the bearing in the unit and lowers the boiling point. The proper amount of coolant also prevents rust in the radiator and the engine block. Extending the life of the heater core is an additional jobs of good fresh clean coolant. Coolant must be used winter or summer. It is never fun to have your car or truck overheat when traveling. Overheating can crack the engine block or warp a cylinder head and destroy a radiator.
